Public kitchens were used and only the rich or wealthy had their own kitchen, usually with a cook. It is a world so far removed from our modern way of life, and so fascinating. Cooking was mostly done over an open fire and was obviously a much lengthier and harder process than we are used to today. Fires were used to keep warm and to cook and food was obviously very basic. But even our earliest ancestors enjoyed sharing a meal with others and it has always been considered a social event, even in the early days of mankind.

I've worked in the kitchen industry for years and yet, nearly every show I go to shows me some new kitchen innovation that I had never previously imagined. Many of the people we speak to talk of having viewed a kitchen showroom, picking a really nice kitchen to have installed, only to see their dream kitchen at the same or lesser price elsewhere. Shopping around and doing your research is important; new innovations appear first at shows, i.e. the Ideal Home Exhibition, 100% Design and the Grand Designs road show. When they do, it takes a while before they are widely publicised and so going to shows is the best way to find out about new kitchen innovations. This is also particularly good, because many exhibitors will sell off their display items for less than the retail price to avoid carting them back to their warehouses and many others provide discounts to people who wish to get quotes from their stands.

Activities that take place in the kitchen set a healthy environment for a family cohesion, this room is generally the most used of all in a family home. The kitchen is generally seen as the heart of any house and therefore it's design is very important. However, this is only so if the kitchen boasts good working environment, especially those of the cooking equipment. Otherwise, a bad design is equally detrimental to a home and family. Choosing a professional kitchen designer can really make a notable difference to the finished product.

Kitchen wall tiles are easy to clean and maintain, they are durable and will last for many years to come, plus they are attractive with many different styles available. Tiles can introduce style and colour to your kitchen walls and floor and complement the overall room scheme. The kitchen is the heart of the home, where a lot of activity takes place on a daily basis.

Typically, a beautiful empty room is created and then it is furnished. Instead of lining all the walls with horizontal bands of built-ins (and there are exceptions to this i.e. Frank Lloyd Wright's prairie homes) the wall spaces are interrupted with vertical elements like windows and doors or focal points such as a fireplaces. The walls of the room are separated into vertical segments instead of continuous horizontal bands. At blank wall areas and in the middle of the room, eclectic pieces of furniture create seating arrangements, while the wall-hung artwork and sculptural collectibles on display determine the room's personality. But the wall, floor and ceiling colors and textures permeate between all of these vertical elements acting as the 'glue' that holds the whole design theme together.

Sort out the pictures of your dream kitchens and decide which elements are the must-haves and which are impractical in the scope of your project, either due to cost or space constraints. You'll want to measure your existing kitchen, marking in cupboards, counter tops and windows which will remain stationary.
